20twenty an overview

20twenty is being tipped as the future off cricket, some feal as if its a joke, while it has made others fall in love with cricket all over again. The fact off the matter is that 20twenty is here to stay. Now with the first world championships around the corner, there could be no better time to preview the game.

There are 12 teams particpating in the inagural 2otwenty championships. All the teams participating in the tournament have brought in an influex off younger players, be it australia or pakistan senior players seem to have been rested. According to south african captain Graham Smith, a new generation off players will emerge. One feals it will take more then just powerfull hitting to win the cup, as has been proven in the domestic competiitions. The game would test the ability off the captain too think off there feat, it would be interesting too see how respective leaders would use there bowlers. Slower bowlers would have a key role to play, batsmen would need to pace the innings with intelligence, and fast bowlers will need to maintain a tight line and lenght if they want too walk off the field with their heads held high.

The teams have been divided into 4 groups, with each have 3 teams each. Group A has the host South Africa along with Bangladesh and West Indies in it. Commentators seem to belive that South Africa might struggle due to one dimensional bowling attack. Whereas WestIndies does seem to have poteintail, but due to poor recent form off there bowling attack I would not be putting my money on them. Bangladesh is a going in with a very young team with not a single player over the age off 25. Although the squad is very young but they are more then capable off pulling an upset, and west indies would need to be on there toes if they want to safely curise through to the super 8.

GroupB consits offZimbabwe, the big gun Austraila and England. Now that Ricky Poniting has said that Aussies would be taking this format seriously other teams better watch out, because as we all know no matter what form off the game it is Austraila is just the best, saying that, there are a number of things too take into account, it must be said that they have a very balanced side, and it is a side made up off complete cricket, they are expected to reach the finals, but it is going to happen sooner then later, and the shorter the format the better the chance other teams will have. Then we have England, off late they have showen decent form. Over the summer the thing that has been highligthed over the summer is there fielding, the team seemed to have taken the personalith off there captain Paul Collingwood and have been saving a lot off runs recently. There problmes lie in the top off the order where there is no consistency, they lack serious spin options as well. If they can over come there upper order worries and if Kevin Peterson fires then they can be a serious threat in the super eights. Then we have zim who have been making the headlines because off the return off there vibrant wicket keeper Taibu, they do have a young and motivated side but it seems unlikely that they are going to goo far in this tournament.

Group C we have Srilanka, Newzeland and Kenya. Srilanka is the team that will come closet to threaten Australia. Although Srilanka is without there might spinner Murali, an oppurnity that Kaushal Lokuarachchi should be pleased about, All and all Srilanka has a fromidble bowling attack, with Vaas leading the way along with Malinga. The batting is strong with the dangerous Sanath Jayasuriya and the elegant Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene, all having different ways of reaching the same target – a substantial total. In case of New Zeland they have a new Captain who has not been tested yet, but apart from that they have a very experienced side, with allround bowling expertise and big hitters like Jacob Oram and Styris, they can be a serious threat.

In group D we have the ever so unpredictable Pakistan, inexperinced India and Scotland. It does not seem as if Pakistan and India are going to posses a serious threat. Pakistan lacks experience in the middle order, which will often cause a collapse hence leading to low scores which the bowlers might have trouble defending. India with their dubious top-order batting and their propensity for being generous in the field, India could well disappoint in this tournament. Then again, if all their reclamation projects are successful, they could be the biggest surprise package of the tournament.

One thing is guranteed and that is entertainment so fasten your seat bealts we are about too embark on a thrilling journey.

lookout for Pakistan

Pakistan start there twenty20 championship campaign on the 12th with a match against scotland. On paper Pakistani side seems very strong and there performance so far in the warm-up matches has been very encouraging as well.

Openers seem to be seattleing in quite well, with Salman Butt geeting decent scores in both the innings and Imran Nazir showing encouraging form in the quick fired 49 against Bangladesh. One down we have Younis Khan who is making a return to the national team after a break. He will have to act as the stabaliser in the middle order, as for the first time in many years Pakistans middle order seems rather shallow. He would be joined by the rather unexperienced Misbah-ul-Haq and Fawad Alam in the middle order. Lower middle order seems rather strong where we have the likes off Shoaib Malik, Mohammed Hafeez, Shahid Afridi and our ever so reliable wicket keeper Kamran Akmal, we also have Yasir Arafat who was instrumental in Kents victorious twenty20 campaign.

Pakistan’s Bowling attack seems very formidble, they have the pace in Shoaib akhtar, accuracy in Muhammed Asif and Umar Gul. Along side the four men pace attack they have as many as four spin bowlers in the side as well. Afridi, Malik, Hafeez and Rehman are all more then capable off producing a match winning spell on there day. The skipper has previoulsy lead his home side too victory in the domestic twenty20 competion. So he has the experience and knowledge off how to make use off the resources at his disposal.

So watch out Pakistan might just be the surprised package.
